David Pope on the Collaborative Environment of our Animatic Talent Lab

`Sub-heading

“Animatic provides participants with new perspectives and actionable knowledge.”

Intro - Updated

David Pope is a screenwriter and script consultant who has collaborated on projects across the film industry, including work with Academy Award and BAFTA-nominated producers and screenwriters. Over the last three years, he has been a key facilitator for our animation talent development lab, Animatic, and will be joining us for the 2026/27 programme. We caught up with David before the first Animatic intensive weekend to discuss what mkaes the programme unique and the value of its community.

As a key facilitator for the talent development lab, David has gained an appreciation for the programme as he believes it successfully combines animation and creative development to create a rich and collaborative environment. He is a firm believer that the needs of the participant and the project are always at the heart of decision-making.

“The lab is a wonderfully unique space where both creative risk and rigorous industry examination coexist successfully in supporting the participants in developing their work and future careers.”

Aside from the industry relationships participants can build, David also values the programme’s supportive peer group, which forms over the six months, as a key benefit of the lab.

“The supportive peer working group formed is a true asset of the program with the fostering of a collaborative environment where participants are urged to support others with thoughtful feedback, actively listening with regards to questions and notes on their own work and to knowledge share.”

David is always invigorated by the selection of stories and projects that he finds on the lab every year. It reinforces his belief that animation is continuously innovating, both in the stories it tells and in the audiences it reaches.

“The delightful variety of stories I was immersed in during the lab reinforced for me how the animated space has an enduring capacity for true innovation both in terms of storylines and audiences reached.”

Paragraph Section 3 - Updated

The Animatic 2026/27 programme kicked off in early October with its introductory intensive weekend at Adelaide Place in Glasgow. This year’s cohort had the opportunity to meet for the first time as they introduced the projects they will develop across the programme. The weekend also featured our first pitching workshop, facilitated by Fiona Gillies and Christine Hartland from My Smash Media. This was the first of several key workshops, including a number to be led by David, that will help our cohort develop their projects for a live pitch during Industry Focus 2027 at GFF.

More Animatic 2026/27 facilitators will be announced, alongside our New Talent Mentorship Scheme Mentors, later this year.
