Truth To Power

Programme Notes by Paul Gallagher

"The idea for this year's retrospective began as I reflected on the legacy and influence of the late Robert Redford. With his classic All the President's Men serving as a starting point, "Truth To Power" focuses on filmmakers who have taken on daunting targets - power, corruption and injustice - and created all-time classic films in the process; films that are not only hugely entertaining but retain sharp relevance to this day."

All The President's Men

Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman investigating a lead inside a busy newsroom

In the run-up to the 1972 elections, Washington Post reporter Bob Woodward covers what seems to be a minor break-in at the Democratic Party National headquarters. He is surprised to find top lawyers already on the defence case, and the discovery of names and addresses of Republican fund organisers on the accused further arouses his suspicions. They find the trail leading higher and higher in the Republican Party, and eventually into the White House itself.
